Community Relations Manager

Location: Calgary

Position Type:  Regular Full Time – 40 hours per week

Position Summary

The Community Relations Manager will be responsible for providing strategic direction and guidance to external and internal Ministry Unit relationships to maximize consistent and effective development and growth in both areas.

Externally, this role manages and supports the development of external relationships specific to effectively communicating to the public and working with individuals, business and foundations who seek to support the work of the Ministry Unit, by providing strategic oversight of the Community Engagement initiatives, including the annual Kettle Campaign and volunteer & student practicum programs, and enhancing grant management. Internally, this role will lead people managers in the development and facilitation of on-site onboarding, training and development, and local policy development, as well as assists with special projects and analytics.

 

Hours/Schedule

Full Time – 40 hours per week. Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Key Responsibilities

Community Engagement Management

  • Works with Community Engagement Coordinator to deliver the annual Calgary Kettle Campaign
  • Provides direction and oversite to the Community Engagement team as they develop long term strategy and develop annual targets to enhance Gift in Kind donations.
  • Enhances the appreciation and stewardship of existing individual and corporate donors.
  • Supports all events that engage the community and raise funds for the Ministry Unit.
  • Plays an active role in key on-site community relations projects, contributing to the planning, execution, and review of project outcomes to ensure alignment with The Salvation Army Mission, Vision and Values.

Grant Management

  • Analyzes and works with team to repeat and enhance current foundation and municipal grants.
  • Develop long term strategy and annual grant application targets.
  • Makes sure grant applications are always in line with The Salvation Army Mission, Vision and Values.
  • Works closely with the Director Team to guarantee all grant applications are strategically in line with the direction of the Ministry Unit; ensures the timely submission of all grant reports.
  • Enhances the engagement, relationship, and appreciation of all grant partners.

Communication Management

  • Ensures maintenance of The Salvation Army branding guidelines and full compliance while enhancing exposure for the Ministry Unit.
  • Works closely with the Grant Writer and Communications Coordinator to strategically maintain all communication pieces that are created for public viewing. These would include:
  • The Ministry Unit website
  • Social media posts on all platforms
  • Donor newsletters
  • Thank you letters to financial and Gift in Kind donors
  • All signs and print pieces
  • Provide guidance to improve all internal communications.

Volunteer and Practicum Student Program

  • Provides strategic direction and oversight to the volunteer and practicum student programs.
  • Oversees and supports the Volunteer Coordinator in the day-to-day operations of volunteer services
  • Ensures all Salvation Army policies and procedures pertaining to volunteer services are being followed.
  • Ensures that Community Services (Calgary) has developed relationships with universities and colleges to effectively recruit practicum students and provides support as required.
  • Manages the growth of the volunteer and practicum programs through budgeting and hiring new staff.

General Staff Administration

  • Participates in the implementation and communication of staff projects, initiatives, and policies.
  • Under the direction of ED:
  1. Ensures that all ministry unit Liability Incident / Claim Reports are submitted according to policy
  2. Supports and advises on employee engagement initiatives and positive workplace culture.
  • Provides leadership team with direction to source, arrange and schedule in-house training (Trauma Informed Care, NVCI, etc.).
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of ministry unit specific staff policies.
  • Working with managers, to ensures CS(C) web-site job board is current to support networking.
  • Lead people managers with:
  1. Development and promotion of a welcoming culture for new staff, volunteers, students and guests.
  2. Onboarding and ministry unit orientation to promote seamless integration of new hires.
  • Oversees the administration of logo wear for staff who require special clothing.
  • Supports and advises on internal communications on issues that pertain to staff.
  • Ensures the maintenance of confidential documentation and records related to the scope of the work profile.

Documentation and Reports

  • Review new/revised Territorial Headquarters policies that relate to the oversite of this position and communicate these changes to staff.
  • Ensures ministry unit specific policies pertaining to directly reporting staff are current, reviewed and updated regularly, making revisions as necessary in collaboration with the Leadership Team. Communicates any approved changes in policies to all Ministry Unit Staff.
  • Ensures police checks for direct reports are renewed, as required.

Financial and Materials Management

  • Participates in budget preparation ensuring that all costs related to training, volunteer and practicum student management, special employee engagement events, logo wear and items needed for community engagement and external relations are accurately planned for and captured within approved budget.
  • Monitors the department budget to ensure good stewardship of resources and human capital.
  • Monitors volunteer and practicum student costs.

Qualifications and Education requirements:

Experience, skills and capabilities:

  • Completion of a formal post-secondary college or University program of three academic years in Business Administration, Community Relations, Volunteer Management or a related degree.
  • Certification in Non-profit Management, Conflict Resolution or Coaching is an asset.
  • Police Information Check (PIC).
  • Minimum five years of related experience, including three years of related leadership experience with at least one year of volunteer management, or program supervisory experience with a specialty in providing advisory and consultative services.
  • Sets clear standards and practices to deliver in accordance with accreditation process, intended ministry outcomes, and resources; monitors and builds an ongoing continuous improvement and learning environment.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal/written); able to relate easily to a diverse team of staff and clients; communicates with integrity, authenticity, and transparency; maintains trust and confidentiality; strong skills in MSOffice  365 (Excel, TEAMS, Word, PPT) to prepare/present information with impact to influence others.
  • Leads with effective change management, organizational development, and staff engagement principles; sound management skills including setting direction, managing performance, assessing capability; proven ability to establish and maintain productive relationships with community-based organizations.
  • Proven experience in developing proactive working relationships with government funder(s); strong financial, analytical and mathematical acumen in analyzing and reporting on business/financial health and risks.
